We make all kinds of choices every day. Some important and some unimportant - makes a difference what you do with your life and who you live with.
I. The importance of the question
Jews were rebellious. Romans were over them and they resented it. Pilate was intelligent. He was aware of the situation. He knew Jesus was not the normal person. He knew there was a dignity about Jesus. Pilate knew Jesus was innocent. He listened to the message from his wife. God revealed to Pilate's wife, a pagan, that Jesus was innocent and he was a righteous person. Not a minor matter when we make a decision about Jesus.. 1. It's important because of who He is - Jesus was human, but he was Lord God also. 2. It's important because of what it determines, our destiny. Life is without meaning without Jesus. There is life beyond the grave. Most important question of life.
II. The individuality of the question. What shall I do with Jesus? We must answer this question for ourselves. No one can do it for you. We decided for ourselves that we would sin. The devil can't make you sin. God doesn't tempt you to sin. We sin because we choose to sin. Jesus died for you. It takes simple faith. Only you have the power to decide. Free moral agent!
III. The imperativeness of the question.
Pilate had no other choice, but to do something with Jesus. He tried to send him to Herod. Then he tried to substitute someone else. Satan does his work - Pilate was guilty so we are guilty of Jesus' blood until we repent and trust Him. Trust Jesus and live, reject Him and die. Jesus says, "What will YOU do with me?"
